Attorney Ethics and Discipline in America

Question: How do I complain about a Lawyer?

Answer: Talk to your lawyer first or ask to speak to a Senior Partner.  Probably 75% of complaints against lawyers result from lack of communication.  If you feel that you have done everything possible to settle the problem with your lawyer without success, you can file a formal complaint.

Examples of Misconduct

The Rules of Professional Conduct cover a wide range of lawyer conduct and misconduct that may be cause for discipline. Some examples of misconduct are:

  • Neglect of your legal matter; failure to communicate with you.

  • Dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation in a case.

  • Revealing your confidential information.

  • Withdrawing money without your approval.

  • Charging excessive or unreasonable fees.

  • Failing to follow court rules and procedures.

If you believe that a lawyer has acted unethically or question the conduct of a lawyer, your state or local bar association can tell you how to file a complaint.
